A&O Mini Sessions Blog
Fall 2022: Pleasure House Point Natural Area, Virginia Beach, Virginia
Spring 2023: Pagoda & Oriental Garden, Norfolk, Virginia
You may recall the fall mini sessions we offered in November 2022 in Virginia Beach. Ashley and I loved our first round of mini sessions and we are so excited to offer them again THIS MONTH! These sessions are in Norfolk at the Pagoda Garden and you can see all the details and book your spring mini session photographers here!
The fun thing about seasonal mini sessions is you can make them anything you want. You can go for a theme like holiday card photos, gift a session to your significant other, or you can use your session as an opportunity for us to work together before another event like your wedding!
We are counting down the days to the wedding of the adorable couple you see above and loved getting to know them and their style in their mini!
Even though our fall sessions were in November, it ended up being 80 degrees so we’re glad that no one was trying to do Christmas sweaters for their session!
We are proud of the work we provided our clients and learned a lot through this process. Having a partner is a major perk when it comes to minis because we assign roles. Ashley is our lead photographer, and I focus on providing direction and talking with our clients while Ash is getting her camera settings right.
Our approach to mini sessions is to provide an amazing product for a low cost, and make the most out of this learning experience as photographers. Every time we shoot, we learn something new and are better prepared for our next session or wedding.
Minis have such short timeframes that it is great practice to capture the perfect shot quickly.
Minis also offer a more casual environment for Ashley and I to be more adventurous and try new styles, poses, and locations without the same pressure of capturing a couple's wedding.
In our fall minis, we learned a lot about light and pushing the envelope during golden hour. One big lesson we learned…daylight savings time is a bitch and do not trust the sun charts to account for it online!
Even though the time change was the night before our sessions, Ashley is a queen of thinking on her toes and we were able to adjust as needed the day of.
Whether it’s sunlight being too bright, weather not cooperating, or difficult indoor lighting, light is often the greatest challenge in photography. However, when you capture that perfect light, it is also your greatest asset and reward!
A skilled photographer must be a master of light, and we work to improve during every session. Ashley and I learned so much during our last minis, we are so thankful for the learning experience!
With our next round of mini sessions just around the corner, we are in planning mode! As we're busy booking in folks, we're also gathering all of our adorable props for the styled picnic we're creating for these minis!
We decided this go around was a great opportunity to create a styled look that will be comfortable for couples or families and offer versatility in how we can photograph the scene. Part of each mini will be at the styled location and the remainder will be exploring the gorgeous Norfolk Pagoda Garden.
Our spring sessions are the perfect way to leave winter behind and welcome warmer weather, your summer wardrobe, and finally return to favorite outdoor activities-like picnics, of course!
If you haven't snagged your mini yet, you want to get on that before we're booked up!
